AstroCartoGraphy: Finding Your Best Place on Earth
How planetary lines mapped across the globe reveal where different energies are strongest in your life.

What Is AstroCartoGraphy?
AstroCartoGraphy (ACG), also called locational astrology or astro-mapping, is a branch of astrology that maps your birth chart's planetary energies across the Earth's surface. Developed by astrologer Jim Lewis in the 1970s, it reveals that different locations on the planet activate different parts of your chart. The place where you live, work, travel, or relocate can significantly influence which planetary energies dominate your experience.
The basic premise is intuitive: you're the same person wherever you go, but different environments bring out different facets of who you are. AstroCartoGraphy provides a systematic, chart-based method for understanding why you thrive in some places and struggle in others — and for identifying locations that support specific goals like career success, romantic fulfillment, or creative inspiration.
Key idea: Your birth chart is cast for a specific location, but you don't stay in one place your whole life. AstroCartoGraphy asks: "What would my chart look like if I had been born at this other location at the same moment?" and maps the answer across the globe.
How It Works
An AstroCartoGraphy map displays lines running across a world map. Each line represents a planet at one of four significant angular positions: the Ascendant (rising), the Descendant (setting), the Midheaven (culminating overhead), and the IC (anti-culminating below). Along each line, that planet would have been angular in your chart had you been born at that location.
For each of your chart's planets (including the Sun and Moon), there are four lines, creating a web of planetary energy across the globe. Where you live in relation to these lines determines which planetary energies are most prominently activated in your life at that location.
The orb of influence for ACG lines is generally considered to be about 300-400 miles (500-700 km) on either side of the line. The closer you are to a line, the stronger the effect. Living directly on a line creates the most intense experience of that planetary energy.
The Four Angle Lines
Each planet has four lines, corresponding to the four angles of the chart:
Ascendant (AS) Line
Where a planet's Ascendant line runs, that planet would be rising on the eastern horizon if you'd been born there. Living near a planet's AS line means that planet's energy strongly colors your identity, appearance, and personal approach. It's the most personally felt angle — the planet becomes part of how you present yourself.
Descendant (DS) Line
The Descendant line places the planet on the western horizon. Near these lines, the planet's energy manifests through other people, partnerships, and one-on-one relationships. You attract people and situations that embody that planet's qualities.
Midheaven (MC) Line
The Midheaven line places the planet at the top of the chart. Near these lines, the planet's energy is expressed publicly — through career, reputation, social status, and public visibility. MC lines are especially relevant for professional goals and public recognition.
IC (Imum Coeli) Line
The IC line places the planet at the bottom of the chart. Near these lines, the planet's energy affects your private life, home, family, and inner world. IC lines influence your sense of belonging, emotional security, and where you feel "at home."
Planetary Lines Explained
Each planet brings different energy to a location:
- Sun lines: Visibility, confidence, vitality. You feel more alive, recognized, and purposeful. Great for career and self-expression. Can be overwhelming if you're naturally introverted.
- Moon lines: Emotional sensitivity, nurturing, home. You feel more emotionally connected and intuitive. Excellent for putting down roots, starting a family, or healing.
- Mercury lines: Communication, learning, commerce. You feel mentally stimulated and socially connected. Great for writing, teaching, studying, or business.
- Venus lines: Love, beauty, pleasure. You feel more attractive, romantic, and creatively inspired. Popular for finding love or enjoying a high quality of life.
- Mars lines: Energy, drive, conflict. You feel more motivated and assertive but may also encounter more competition and aggression. Good for athletic or entrepreneurial pursuits; can be combative.
- Jupiter lines: Luck, expansion, abundance. You feel optimistic and opportunities seem to flow. One of the most desirable lines for general well-being and success.
- Saturn lines: Structure, responsibility, restriction. You feel more disciplined and serious but may encounter more obstacles and limitations. Good for building something lasting; can feel heavy.
- Uranus lines: Disruption, liberation, eccentricity. You feel more unconventional and restless. Life becomes unpredictable. Good for reinvention; unstable for those seeking security.
- Neptune lines: Spirituality, confusion, creativity. You feel more inspired and spiritually open but may also encounter deception or lack of clarity. Great for creative and spiritual pursuits; tricky for practical matters.
- Pluto lines: Transformation, power, intensity. You feel compelled to transform and may encounter power dynamics. Profoundly impactful but can be overwhelming.
Where Lines Cross
When two planetary lines cross or run close together, their energies blend at that location. These crossing points, called "parans" in technical ACG terminology, create unique combinations:
- Venus + Jupiter crossing: One of the most auspicious locations — love, abundance, joy, and social success.
- Mars + Pluto crossing: Intense and potentially dangerous — power struggles, extreme ambition, or transformative conflict.
- Sun + Jupiter crossing: Excellent for career visibility, recognition, and professional success.
- Moon + Venus crossing: Deeply nurturing for emotional and romantic life. A beautiful place to call home.
Using AstroCartoGraphy Practically
- Relocation: If you're considering a move, check which planetary lines run through potential destinations. Choose locations that support your priorities.
- Travel: Even short visits to specific planetary lines can activate their energy. A vacation on your Venus line might spark romance; a business trip to your Jupiter-MC crossing might generate opportunities.
- Remote work: In an era of remote work, ACG helps you choose a home base that supports your overall well-being rather than just your career.
- Understanding past moves: Looking at ACG retroactively often explains why certain places felt amazing and others felt wrong, even when logic suggested otherwise.
Limitations and Considerations
- ACG is one factor, not the only factor. Practical considerations (cost of living, language, family proximity) matter too.
- Challenging lines aren't always bad. A Saturn-MC line might be difficult, but it could also be where you build your most lasting professional achievement.
- You don't have to move. Understanding which planetary energies are strong where you currently live helps you work with (rather than against) that energy.
- Requires accurate birth time. ACG is extremely sensitive to birth time accuracy. Even a few minutes' difference can shift lines significantly.
To explore your AstroCartoGraphy, start by generating your birth chart with an accurate birth time. Your planetary positions determine where your ACG lines fall across the globe.
